I took my wife to Olive Garden for our 25th anniversary.

Not the fanciest place.

Not the most romantic place.

But it was her favorite.

She had a booth she always liked, tucked against the wall where she could people-watch without feeling like everyone was watching her.

Our dinner cost $78.

I had even ordered her favorite dessert.

For twenty-five years, we’d done things that way.

Nothing extravagant.

Just us.

At least, that’s what I thought.

I ordered first.

She ordered chicken Alfredo.

Then I put my fork down.

“I need to tell you something.”

She stopped.

Her hand was resting on a breadstick.

She slowly put it back on the plate.

“What?”

I took a breath.

“In 2011, I had an affair.”

She didn’t move.

“Four months.”

Still nothing.

“I ended it.”

She stared at me.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t cry.

Didn’t even look angry.

Finally, she asked:

“Why now?”

I swallowed.

“Because she called me last week.”

My wife’s expression changed slightly.

“She has a daughter.”

I looked down.

“She’s twelve.”

My voice cracked.

“She looks like me.”

My wife remained completely still.

“She has the same birthmark I have. Behind her left ear.”

My wife finally looked away.

“She needs surgery.”

“How much?”

“Forty-seven thousand dollars.”

She looked back at me.

“And you want to give it to her.”

“She asked me for help.”

My wife picked up her purse.

She stood.

I thought she was leaving.

Instead, she looked down at me.

Her voice was steady.

“I knew about her.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Since 2012.”

I couldn’t speak.

She continued.

“I knew about the affair.”

My mouth went dry.

“Then why didn’t you ever say anything?”

She looked at me for several seconds.

“Because in 2011, while you were with her…”

She paused.

“…I was at the same hotel.”

I felt my entire body go cold.

“Different floor.”

She reached into her purse.

“And I wasn’t alone.”

She placed a photograph on the table.

I looked down.

It was old.

Faded.

But unmistakable.

My wife.

And a man standing beside her.

I recognized him immediately.

My best friend.

Daniel.

The man who had been my best man at our wedding.

The man who had stood beside me when our first daughter was born.

The man I’d trusted for twenty-five years.

I looked at my wife.

“No.”

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me that’s not what I think it is.”

“It is.”

My hands started shaking.

“You were having an affair with Daniel?”

“No.”

The answer came so quickly that I froze.

She sat back down.

“I wasn’t having an affair.”

“Then why were you with him?”

She took a breath.

“Because Daniel called me that night.”

“What night?”

“The night you told me you were working late.”

My chest tightened.

“I remember.”

“I know.”

She looked down.

“He called me because he had seen you enter the hotel with another woman.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“He asked me whether I knew.”

I stared at her.

“So you went there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To see for myself.”

She pushed the photograph toward me.

“I followed you.”

My heart sank.

“I saw you walk into the elevator with her.”

I couldn’t look at her.

“I went upstairs.”

She continued.

“Daniel came with me.”

I stared at the photograph.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“All this time?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you leave me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I loved you.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It didn’t make sense to me either.”

She folded her hands.

“I spent months wondering whether I should leave.”

“But you stayed.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“Because I was pregnant.”

My blood went cold.

“What?”

She whispered:

“I was pregnant when you were having the affair.”

I couldn’t move.

“Our youngest?”

She nodded.

“She was born in 2012.”

I looked at her.

Then everything suddenly seemed different.

The dates.

The hotel.

The silence.

The way my wife had looked at me when I told her about the other woman.

There was something I hadn’t understood.

I had assumed my wife had been silent because she was forgiving me.

She hadn’t been.

She had been protecting our family.

I reached for her hand.

She pulled it away.

“I need you to listen.”

I nodded.

“I knew about your affair.”

“Yes.”

“I knew the woman was pregnant.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She told me.”

I stared at her.

“She called me.”

My hands went numb.

“She told me she was pregnant with your child.”

I couldn’t speak.

“She wanted money.”

I whispered:

“She said she was pregnant?”

My wife nodded.

“But she lied.”

“What?”

“She wasn’t pregnant with your child.”

I stared at her.

“Then whose daughter is she?”

My wife looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“But the birthmark…”

“Doesn’t prove anything.”

She reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a folded document.

A DNA report.

I stared at it.

“What’s this?”

“I got it tested last year.”

I looked at the name.

The result was clear.

Probability of paternity: 0%.

I looked at my wife.

“You tested her?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She looked away.

“The woman sent me the report.”

My mind raced.

“She contacted you?”

“She contacted both of us.”

“But why?”

My wife looked at me.

“Because she wants $47,000.”

I understood.

“She doesn’t actually know if I’m the father.”

“Exactly.”

I sat back.

For twenty-five years, I had carried guilt over a child I thought might exist.

Now I didn’t know what to believe.

My wife reached across the table.

“There is one more thing.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

She didn’t smile.

“I had Daniel investigate the woman.”

I looked at her.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“The same Daniel from the hotel?”

She nodded.

“He’s been helping me for fourteen years.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew what you did.”

I stared at her.

“And because he knew I couldn’t trust you.”

Those words hurt more than anything else.

My wife took a breath.

“The woman has done this before.”

My blood ran cold.

“How many times?”

“Five.”

“Five?”

“She finds married men who had affairs.
