Not the bitter, forced laugh people do when they’re trying to seem unbothered. A real one, because the absurdity of the sentence he’d just said—like we’re common criminals—struck me as almost poetic, given the circumstances.

“You are, though,” I said. “You stole my card, Mauro.”

“I borrowed it. It’s a family trip. My parents deserve this after everything they’ve—”

“It’s a platinum card with my name on it, tied to my business account, that you took out of my wallet Tuesday morning without asking, and used to book four business-class tickets to Cabo and, I’m assuming, whatever suite you’re currently standing in demanding I pay for.” I kept my voice even. “That’s not borrowing. That’s theft. I’d know—I deal with fraud claims for a living.”

The line went quiet for a second, just airport noise and his mother’s voice rising somewhere in the background, sharp and indignant even through the phone.

“Reactivate the card right now,” Mauro said, his voice dropping into the low, controlled register he used when he wanted to sound threatening instead of desperate, “or I swear I’m divorcing you.”

I let that sit in the air for a moment. Three years of marriage, and this was the hill he’d chosen.

“Okay,” I said simply.

“Okay?” He sounded thrown, like he’d expected panic, not agreement.

“Okay, divorce me. I’m not reactivating a card that’s already flagged for suspicious activity with my bank’s fraud department, Mauro. That’s not a threat you can hold over me. That’s just a Tuesday.”

His mother, Carmen, grabbed the phone at that point—I could hear the scuffle of it changing hands—and launched immediately into the speech I’d been half-expecting since the day I married into that family. “You ungrateful girl. After everything we’ve done for you. When you two get back, I’m going to make sure my son puts you out of that house. It was never really yours anyway.”

That was the part that actually made me sit up straighter, because Carmen had said the quiet part out loud for the first time in three years: the assumption that the house—my house, the one I’d bought two years before I ever met Mauro, the one whose mortgage I alone had paid down every month since—was somehow theirs to give or take.

“Carmen,” I said, very calmly, “that house is in my name only. It was before Mauro and I married, and it still is. You can absolutely try to put me out of it. I’d genuinely love to see you attempt that in court.”

She sputtered something about family and loyalty and ingratitude, and I let her finish, because I’d already stopped listening in any way that mattered. I’d made my decision hours earlier, while Mauro was still packing his suitcase and lying to my face about a “work conference,” before I’d even confirmed the charges on my card. I’d called my lawyer that morning. By the time Mauro’s flight had boarded, the paperwork for a legal separation was already being drafted, along with a formal notice to my bank’s fraud department and a police report for unauthorized use of a financial account—filed not because I necessarily wanted him prosecuted, but because I wanted an ironclad record establishing that the debt and the charges were his doing, not mine.

“Put Mauro back on,” I said.

He came back on the line, quieter now, the bravado drained out somewhere over the last two minutes.

“I already spoke to a lawyer this morning,” I told him. “The separation paperwork is being filed today. You can enjoy your trip on your parents’ dime, because it’s not coming out of my account, and it’s not coming out of my house. When you land, you’ll have somewhere to be—it just isn’t with me.”

“Rebecca, wait—”

I hung up before he could finish threatening a marriage he’d already made very clear he didn’t respect.

The trip, as it turned out, got considerably more complicated once the airline and hotel flagged the reversed charges from my bank’s fraud dispute. I heard through mutual friends that there was a rather memorable scene at a resort front desk in Cabo. I can’t say I felt much sympathy.

Six months later, the divorce was finalized. I kept the house. I kept my platinum card, reissued with a new number that only I have access to. And I’ve never once regretted laughing instead of panicking on that call, because somewhere between “reactivate the card” and “I’m divorcing you,” Mauro handed me the easiest decision of my life.

Not My Card to Steal “Are you even listening to me, Rebecca?” Mauro’s voice cracked through the phone, sharp enough that I had to hold it away from my ear. …

[13

post-3571","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-h-post
["GET
