My boomer dad asked me last week why I’m still renting at 43.

He didn’t ask it to be cruel.

He genuinely didn’t understand.

We were sitting at his kitchen table when he looked at me and said:

“So when are you going to buy a house?”

I laughed.

“When I can afford one.”

He frowned.

“You’ve been working your whole life.”

“I know.”

“So save up.”

I looked at him.

“A starter home in our area is around $410,000.”

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

“The down payment alone is about $82,000.”

He shrugged.

“That’s not so bad.”

I blinked.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Eighty-two thousand dollars.”

He leaned back in his chair.

“Break it into pieces. You don’t have to save it all at once.”

So I did.

I explained it as simply as I could.

“After rent, insurance, groceries, daycare, utilities, and everything else, I can save about $400 a month.”

He started doing the math.

Out loud.

“Four hundred times twelve…”

He paused.

“That’s forty-eight hundred a year.”

“Yes.”

He kept going.

“Ten years…”

I said nothing.

He stared at the table.

“Twenty years would be ninety-six thousand.”

Then he started working backward.

Finally, he looked up.

“Seventeen years?”

I nodded.

“About that.”

And then he went quiet.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just quiet.

After a few seconds, he said something I didn’t expect.

“I put down $3,200 on our first place.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“I had it saved in eight months.”

That was when the conversation changed.

He wasn’t comparing us anymore.

He was remembering.

He had bought his first home while working at a plant.

No college degree.

No second job.

No side hustle.

No investment portfolio.

Just a steady paycheck.

Eight months of saving had been enough for a down payment.

I took seventeen years.

And that was only if nothing went wrong.

No emergency.

No job loss.

No medical bill.

No car repair.

No rent increase.

Nothing.

My dad leaned back in his chair.

For the first time, I could see that he was actually looking at the numbers.

Not the headlines.

Not the arguments online.

The numbers.

“I always thought you kids were exaggerating,” he said quietly.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because honestly?

That was it.

That was the whole conversation.

No political argument.

No lecture about avocado toast.

No speech about working harder.

He just sat there.

And finally understood something.

He hadn’t been trying to defend a broken system.

He simply had no idea how different the numbers had become.

For years, he had assumed younger people were doing something wrong because his generation had been able to do something that now feels almost impossible.

But nobody had ever sat him down and shown him the math.

$3,200 in eight months.

$82,000 in seventeen years.

Same goal.

Completely different reality.

He looked at me again.

“I honestly didn’t know.”

And for some reason, that meant more to me than an apology.

Because sometimes people don’t understand your struggle because they don’t care.

Sometimes they don’t understand because they have never actually seen the numbers.

My dad finally did.

And once he saw them, he stopped arguing.
